There is an old book on old English surnames, whose title I unfortunately do not have at my fingertips, that includes information that exactly corresponds to the first part of your thesis. If memory serves, it states that the name Baugh was originally Anglo-Norman and was deBaa or deBaha from the Coutances region of Normandy. I came across this book at the Ohio State Library some years back, and I'm certain it must be available at other libraries as well. Yours, Bob Foster, g-g-grandson of Martha Ann Baugh of MO and TX.
