Baugh Family Genealogy Forum

From piecing together various records, it is my theory that the Baa/Baugh family (the non-German one that is) originated from the village of Bahais, Normandy, France (near present-day Coutances). King Edward III, the Confessor, first invited them to England in about 1055 to help stiffen the Welsh border defenses. Then in about 1062 a branch was invited up to Scotland by King Malcolm III, Canmore, to help defend against his enemies in northern England. In Scotland the family took on the name Waugh (a common naming alteration), and also some added "hope" (i.e., valley) to the name, eventually gravitating to Wauchope as the preferred spelling. Over time the family spread back southward into England as well.If anyone has data that helps prove or disprove this theory I would greatly appreciate it.
