JOHN JACOB BAUER b 1815 Alsace->NY->NE?

Looking in a haystack for John Jacob Bauer (Jr)(used the name Jacob) b 1815 Alsace. Moved as teenager with parents and siblings to Buffalo then Eden, NY (by 1835). Family tradition says he eventually moved "West," maybe Nebraska, but no trace ever found. Parents John Jacob Bauer & Maria Catherine Ebert of Lembach, Alsace. Anybody out there have this ancestor?
