Wm & Ann, Cherokee Co AL 1850-1870
I'd like some help in nailing down my Battles family connection, please! My 3rd great grandmother was Margaret Battles, who married Daniel Shew in Cherokee County AL around 1847-1848. They are on the 1850 census (Daniel and Marget "Shoe") with a one-year-old son William. In 1860, Margaret was a widow with three childrem, William, my GG grandmother Martha Louise, and the youngest, a boy named Gilford. In 1870, Margaret was living with Martha Louise and her husband (Jasper) Baird and their one year old daughter, my great grandmother Eula.
My theory from the records is that Margaret was the oldest daughter of William & Ann Battles, whose other children included (as of the 1850 census) Asender (sp?), Samantha, Julia, William, Franklin, Lewis and Charlsie/Charlsey. They are all living nearby in 1850, 1860 and 1870. Margaret's first son was named William (and her husband's father was Boston Shew so the kid wasn't named for that side of the family!). I can't find another Battles family in the immediate area that looks like it would be a "fit" and it _has_ to be more than just coincidence that this is the only Battles family that stays on the same page (or immediately prior or following page) of the census in 1850, 1860 and 1870.
Anybody working on this line? Let's talk!
