Battle Family Genealogy Forum

I am part of the Battle family with roots going back to about 1810 in Davidson/Williamson County (Nolensville/Nashville), Tennessee. I am descended from William Mayo Battle and Sarah Jane Smith. I, too, own a copy of "The Battle Book" published in 1930. A photo of my father, William Robert Battle II, as a baby appears on page 462 of the book. I now live in a suburb of St. Louis, Mo., and get back to Tenn. as often as possible. My aunt and uncle, Betty Battle Green and Lucien Hunter Battle, still live on land that was part of William Mayo Battle's original large land holdings. As you can note in the book on p. 463, one of William Mayo Battle's sons was Col. Isaac Joel Battle, who headed the 20th Tenn. regiment of the Confederacy. There are numerous Battles in the Nashville area that are of African-American descent. I often heard while growing up that Col. Battle held many slaves, and that at the end of the Civil War when he released them, many took his last name as their own. I would be interested to know of any further info you may have related to my branch of this family. Good luck with your search!
