As a result of posting my previous message I have learned that Edmund's father was not George Battle but George Self. Edmund was the son of the George Self and Mary Barber, who did not marry. It is thought that they chose "Battle" for his name because Mary's parents were Robert Battle and Lucy Barber. Robert and Lucy did not marry until after Mary was born so we cannot be certain that Robert was Mary's father and therefore Edmund's grandfather. Would love to hear from anyone who can shed light on this matter.
