Battles of Rome, Georgia before 1894

Does anyone know how the Battles family of
Rome, Georgia got to Rome, Georgia? My Great
Grandfather who lived there was John Edgar Battles. Lore has it that they moved there
from Tennesee to fight for the South during the Civil War.
