Thomas C. E. Battey, Sr.: Are you a descendant of TCB? I liked your nice summary, which I think is accurate in all but one detail. Thomas Chester Battey was my great grandfather. He was indeed a significant figure in late Kiowa history, but he did not arrive in [what is now called] Oklahoma until October 1871. The Jacksboro massacre was in May 1871 and Satanta and Big Tree were tried in July, so Thomas could have played no role in their confessions. Thomas loved the Kiowa people and he came to know Satanta and Big Tree personally, was on friendly terms with them, and defended them against false accusations of violating their parole following their Jacksboro conviction and later release, though I think he did not much like or admire Satanta. :-) He was a very close friend and supporter of Kicking Bird.
