Lori, Marie Maxine Batton was born Mar. 21, 1922 in Sand Fork, Gilmer Co. WV. She died in Homosassa, Citrus Co. FL June 20, 1999. Her parents were Alferd A. Batton and Nettie Lucina. Fred Boggs was born Feb. 19, 1921, died Feb. 4, 1992 in WV. Marie was white according to her birth certificate and history would prove that. In that time there were strict laws against interracial marriage, and if she had been Native American, WV would have considered her black. When she and Fred married, they would have been thratened with arrest.
Alferd Batton is in the 1910 census for Gilmer Co. as stepson to Henderson Stout. I believe his mother was Mary Batton, daughter of Samuel S. Batton and Elizabeth S. Beams. Alferd had a sister (probably half-sister) Sarah J. born 1902. Mary Batton married first Palermo Elliott and second Henderson Stout. If you want to confirm Marie's race, you can get her death certificate from Citrus Co.
