In his will dated 9 April 1703 John Ash of Danho, South Carolina, refers to his "beloved wife Mary, the daughter of Samuel Batt, late rector of Coulson (sic) in Wiltshire in England"
The Rev Samuel Batt, rector of East Coulston, (not Coulson – there’s no such place in England, let alone in Wilts) as he described himself in his will dated 12 Apr 1684, named four children in the will: Samuel, John (“second son”), Mary, and Thomas (“youngest son”), plus wife Mary. The children were still minors on 1 June 1690 according to a document attached to his will.
Samuel Batt, curate of Edington (the parish adjoining East Coulston) married Mary Toop of Sarum (Salisbury) on 20 July 1671 at Boscombe, Wilts (per Phillimore's Marriage Index).
So Mary would have been born between 1672 and 1684, not as early as 1655. Unfortunately East Coulston parish register is missing before 1714, and the BTs are missing from 1672 until 1701, so her baptism won’t be found.
Christopher Batt and his wife Mary emigrated to Newbury, Massachusetts from Salisbury in 1638 with five children under 10 (all well documented). Samuel wasn’t one of the five but in Mary Batt’s will of 14 March 1679 in Boston, Mass., her son Samuel is described as a clergyman in England.
He thus appears to have been born c1639 in Newbury, Mass., not c1625 in Coulson, Wilts, coming/being sent to England, and matriculating to Wadham College, Oxford University on 15 June 1657.
