David Batey, the man who discovered my townsite at Sedro-Woolley, WA 98284 was born in Carlisle, Cumberland County, England, in 1849. Thqt is the far northwest corner of England. He could remember the name of his father who died when he was an infant, but his mother was Mrs. Ann Batey, who accompanied him when he emigrated from Newcastle to Syracuse, NY, in 1872.
After working as a carpenter there, in Omaha and San Francisco, he discovered this site on the Skagit River in 1878, along with two boyhood friends from two adjoining English counties.
I hope this helps you and that anyone else with more information will share it with me for my book.
