I'm researching my mothers family who emigrated to New Zealand in 1865 from the Wear valley We dont have much concrete to go on at the moment but we know that Grahams and Batey's have been getting married in the family for a long time. My grandfather visited the parish they came from (before he died in 1971) and I know that Graham is considered Scottish. So if both these names are in the same location I would guess they both might be Scottish.
