Pauline Copper: I had a look through my Bates genealogy database file and records. In my branch of the Bates family tree I did not find your Erastus James & Ezra Bates Hewitt families of Yonge, Leeds, Ontario, Canada and NY. My family Bates came originally from England in 1660's to MA and then to CT. From here they went in several directions after the War of Independence, with 3 brothers on the British side of the conflict with 1 sister married to another Tory minister. These family members landed in Canada with the rest of the family staying in CT.
I have come across several "Bates" families around Hamilton/Burlington region in Ontario in the 1790-1830 period that did not derive from these Bates ancestors in my family. It appears to me that they came from England at that time. In other historical documents I have found, there were Bates members in the Point Pelee colony (on Lake Erie) and there are published record of Bates family members (not from CT) living on the north shore of Lake Ontario. I have also found Bates members living in NY state in the northern NY (Upstate NY) region who came from Canada to settle in NY state. These I have not been able to link to my Bates Family at this time.
In other United Empire Loyalist (UEL) records, there were other Bates in the various regiments that came to Canada after 1783, and some of them settled in eastern Ontario and the area north of Belleville. Many of these settlers were from Catholic or other ethnic regiments. If I come across these Bates families, I will forward you the references. I have put about 1200 of my Bates family members on a tree in Ancestry.com - Bates Family Tree. You may have a look there to see if there are any links to your Bates family.
The Bates Family members that came to Canada in 1790's, some of their children left Canada around 1855 time frame and migrated to Iowa. One member did live in Illinois for a while, but then moved to Iowa and from there, their children moved to Nebraska and some states further west. The Bates letters from the Archives of Ontario show them farming in Illinois, Iowa, Missouri in the late 1800's. From more recent family records, some of the descendants moved to Nebraska very late 1800's.
I trust this will help resolve some of the questions you have about the Bates Family members that I am tracking.
