Evelyn Bates Kachline Obituary - October 20, 2006
Evelyn B. Kachline, 84, of Cooperstown, NY, died Tuesday, Oct. 17, 2006, at Bassett Healthcare in Cooperstown.
Evelyn was born Jan. 12, 1922, in Jefferson City, Mo., the daughter of Ernest and Ella Bates. She was raised in the St. Louis area and graduated from Harris Teacher's College in 1943, having completed the four-year bachelor's program in three years. She taught elementary school in the St. Louis area for several years.
She married Clifford Kachline on Dec. 24, 1948, in St. Louis. They resided in the St. Louis area until 1967, when they moved to Summit, N.J. Two years later, because Cliff had accepted employment as the historian at the Baseball Hall of Fame, they moved to the Cooperstown area.
A devoted and loving mother, grandmother and wife, Evelyn enjoyed a well-deserved reputation as an excellent cook and generously shared her many recipes.
She also enjoyed crafts, needlepointing and crocheting. Evelyn was very active and involved in community life.
She was a past president of "Pinch-Hitters," a charitable organization consisting of the wives of the executives and players of the St. Louis Cardinal baseball organization, and a past president of the Parent Teachers Association in St. Louis.
In the Cooperstown area, she was the first paid employee of the Society of American Baseball Research (SABR), a past member of the Cooperstown Lake and Valley Garden Club, a member of the League of Women Voters of the Cooperstown Area and also a past member of the Woman's Club of Cooperstown.
Evelyn enjoyed music and singing. She sang with the Susquehanna Singing School and The Voices of Cooperstown for a number of years.
A volunteer for many organizations, she was particularly proud of the 32 years she served as a volunteer at Bassett Hospital.
Evelyn is survived by her husband, Clifford Kachline, of Cooperstown; her daughter and son-in-law, Jerelyn and Bruce Ramo of Dunwoody, Ga.; her daughter, Joyce Thomas and Joyce's longtime friend, Michael Oetting, of Lexington Ill.; four grandchildren, Dr. Brandon Ramo (Stacie) of Nashville, Tenn., Devin Ramo (Christen) of Atlanta, Ga., Chelsea Allen (Matt) of Bloomington, Ill., and Heather Thomas of Lexington, Ill.; and by her sister and brother-in-law, Ina and Walter Cordes of St. Louis.
She was predeceased by her brother and sister-in-law, Lloyd and Betty Jane Bates.
In accordance with Evelyn's wishes, funeral services and burial will be private.
