Confusion understandable in determining which Isaac Bates
was father of Gilbert Bates of Montgomery Co., VA since,
several Isaac Bates lived in the area around 1800.
However, Bates DNA test puts some validity in the
old query, which appeared in the April 1923 edition of
"The Bates Bulletin. Some flaws in the query, but it
suggest this Bates family came to VA from Cape Cod, MA.
Apparently, they had a stop over in New York State, before
arriving in Montgomery Co., VA.
TO QUOTE THE QUERY
"A Bates came from Cape Cod to Tennessee about 1800.
His wife's name was Covey, and their children born
in Tennessee, were

first a Miss Bush, and second Mary Golden or Golding,
who was born in Penn., a daughter of Matthew Golding, who
was born in New York. The 2nd marriage took place at
South Bend, Ind.A son Andrew J. was born in Wayne
County, Ind.A relative Samuel C. born in New York, perhaps a brother of Andrew C., had a son Perry Bates.
