Sharon, you're probably already aware of this, but in case you aren't, there's a Revolutionary pension file for your William Bates. If you don't have it and you want to know what's in it, I'll look for the transcription I have of it. What interested me in particular about it is that he mentions that he moved west because he wanted revenge on the Indians for the deaths of members of his family. My ancestor, Elizabeth Bates Wells' father, Joseph Wells, was killed by Indians in Union Co., SC, probably during the Cherokee War around 1762. I believe that this family was also from PA; I do not have any proof, however, that there is any connection to your William.
