Bates from SC to AL (Lydd, England is involved)
My Bates family has been strongly associated with central Alabama since my gggrandfather, Sidney Bates, moved to Chilton County in the early 1800’s
I received the results of my Family Tree DNA test last week. I have a near match with Clement Bates. Clement Bates and family came over from Lydd, Kent County, England, in 1635, to the Massachusetts Bay Colony with his brother James Bates. He settled in Hingham which is on the south side of the Boston Metro area but is in Plymouth County.
I have spent several hours reading the Clement and James’ family trees on the internet. None of the these family trees appear to had any member who came south in the time frame necessary to be the father of Sidney Bates, my gggrandfather, born in 1790, in South Carolina. If further investigation continues to yield the same results then the DNA test means that Clement Bates and I have a common male ancestor prior to the birth of Clement Bates.
I can not help but think about something my father said back in the 1960's when I asked him some questions about his family. He thought his family had come into the Carolinas from England(or Scotland) in the 1700's. Also he said, very definitely, there was a large group of Bates in central Alabama to which we were not kin. Now, as you well know there are lots of Bates in AL who trace to the Bates in Virginia. They would have been too distant for my dad to know of any kinship.
The DNA test is valid for male members of the Bates family. This means that if a Bates man can trace his family tree to any of the following Bates, then your family would also be part of the Lydd, Kent County, England, Bates.

All of the names above come from Census records, toomstones, or some contacts who have been very helpful to me. If anyone has any corrections I would like to hear from them.
If any of you see anything about Sidney Bates parents or about Bates from Lydd, Kent county, England, coming into the Carolina's before 1790 I would appreciate hearing from you.
