Mrs. Mary C. Benagh, late of Birmingham, AL, furnishes the editor with the following list of the children of Agnes Parsons (IX., p. 256, taken from the Bible of Judge Barton Bates of St. Louis.
Children of Agnes Parsons and first husband Samuel Richardson were:1) George Richardson, born 10 June 1740; 2) Samuel Richardson, born 20 November 1741;and her second husband, Charles L. Woodson 3) Agnes Parsons Woodson, born 14 December 1745, married John Ellyson; 4) George Woodson born 4 May 1747, married Sarah Friend; 5) Sarah Woodson, born 4 August 1749, married first James Clark, married second Archibald Bolling,; 6) Caroline Matilda Woodson, born 17 October 1751, married Thomas Fleming Bates; 7} Tarleton Woodson, born 18 March 1754, married Miss Van De Veer of New York; Frederick Woodson, born 24 March 1756, never married; 8) Ursula woodson, born 30 January 1760, married Travers Luddington.(Addendum by the preparer of this lineage:She was also half sister to Charles Woodson, son of Charles and his first wife Mary Pleasants, who married Ann Trotter.
Mrs. Benagh adds:“My children and the Bates family came from this Agnes Parsons. My children came from Agnes Parsons and Samuel Richardson and the Bates from Agnes Parsons and second husband Charles Woodson.I hold a copy of a letter written by Agnes Parson to her daughter Caroline Matilda (Woodson) Bates, mother of Edward Bates of Missouri (dated ) “31st 5 month 1778” signed “ty loveing mother Agnes Woodson”.I have a letter written by Sarah Woodson Clark from Greenock, Scotland, to her sister Caroline Matilda (Woodson) Bates dated March 22, 1774.These letters were sent by Judge Barton Bates and Tarleton Woodson Clark.
William Pope Dabney and his brother, Prof. Robert Dabney, who died at Sewanee, TN came from charles Woodson and Mary Pleasants.George William Benagh, my late husband, was professor of Mathematics, Natural Philosphy and Astronomy in University of Alabams.Landon C. Garland was president (of the college?) at the time.My husband was preparing text-books in high mathematics at the time of his death.
Charles Van der Veer Woodson wrote to Mr. Brock that he had a looking-glass, framed in walnut, which bears the following inscription:“This glass belonged to Stephen Tarleton, who was my great-grandfather and died in the year 1687.I have had the present frame put on it this 14th of December 1794 – Charles Woodson”.Charles Van de Veer Woodson is the son of Charles Woodson and Nancy Jackson; Grandson of (4 Tarleton Woodson, Jr. (Major) + Anne Van der Veer; Great Grandson of 3) John Woodson + Judith Tarleton. If Charles Woodson is Charles Van der Veer Woodson, then the placement under the older Tarleton Woodson (brother of Charles Woodson above) is correct. However, if the Charles Woodson is the above person (brother of the Tarleton Woodson who is shown as having married Ann Van der Veer in Descendants of John Woodson) then the placement of this family DOES belong under the Tarleton Woodson who is the son of Charles Woodson and Agnes Parsons Richardson.
Mrs. Mary C. Benagh, provider of the additional data on this line stated that there is a deed dated in 1783, recorded in chesterfield county, from Charles Woodson to his son George, for the place in Chesterfield general called Toms and bounded by the land of Robert Elam, James Dixon and John Baugh, the proprietors of the land shown by the name of “Roxdale”, formerly purchased by Tarleton Woodson, father of Charles, of John Soane on August 21, 1727,Witnessed by Ben Harris, Tarleton Woodson and Frederick Woodson, Jr.Roxdale or “Roche Dale Hundred” was a part of the settlement of Sir Thomas Dale in 1613.It was generally called Neck of Land in Charles City and now it is known as Jones’ Neck.(The Genealogies of Virginia Families)
