It isn't clear from your message whether it was your grandmother who was born on the county line, or your great grandfather, George W. BATES.If it's your grandmother, the time line would fit.
George Casner BATES had several sons, one of whom was George Washington BATES and another of whom was my great grandfather, Bartine BATES.George Casner Bates had 15 children by two wives.George Washington BATES was born in Montgomery County, PA, served in the Civil War, was awarded a land grant in Ohio, and moved there.I've been told there is quite a bit of information in the NARA files about his record in the Civil War.I don't know much about Ohio, but my understanding from another of his descendants that he lived in Salem, Ohio, which may be near the Pennsylvania border. When George Casner BATES died in 1860, a couple of years after that, his widow Esther Huston BATES moved to Salem to live with or near George Washington BATES, taking along her three youngest children.Est(h)er is buried somewhere around Salem.
George Washington BATES is probably buried around there also.I understand that Geo. Wash. BATES, or Esther, left a family bible which was discarded by some one of his sons because the son didn't think that old stuff was important.I can put you in touch with a couple of people who might know more.If you can find where Geo. Wash. BATES is buried, you probably can find out more about him.I'm hung up on his father, who might be our common ancestor.I think Geo Casner B is buried in Old Puff's Cemetery in Montgomery County, PA, but the records were destroyed about the time he died. There is a web site with a listing of two of his sons who are buried there.I've seen their headstones.Geo. Casner B probably is buried very near them, but had a grave site which was destroyed when the "new" church, now a community house, was built about 1861 or 1862.His tombstone is probably a part of the stone fence.Old Puff's Church is the Upper Dublin Evangelical Lutheran Church. Wish I could be more help with George Washington BATES but he's not my direct line.Maybe he's my gr gr uncle.Anyway, if you can determine that your great grandfather is the same George Washington BATES, let me know, and I will scrape up the names of distant cousins who are his direct decendants.George Casner BATES was probably born in Ambler or Centre Square Montgomery County, PA around 1784.The further back you go the harder it is to find people who were yeoman farmers, unless they owned land. And then there's only the deeds.Which will give you where they lived.
But not who their parents were, or where they were born.People were pretty careless with even church records or school records. And name spelling - very creative.
