Thanks for coming back Adam.It is quite a nightmare trying to trace the Baters. There are so many lines and the given names were constantly repeated.I have 3 William Bater's in my tree.
My Great Grandfather(your 3 x Gt.GF), William born 1834 Swimbridge was son of Joseph b.1802 (married Ellen).
His father was Richard Bater b.1771 (married Ann Voisey). He also had a son William b.1796 brother to Joseph
Richard's father was John b.1741 (married Ann Edworthy)
Our William (1834)also had a son William b.1861 Mile End who as far as I know married someone called Jane Fleming in 1880. So do you come down the line from this son William? Hopefully your grandfather will be able to tell you.
Our William also had 7 other children, Mary Jane, Elizabeth, John, Mary Ann, Rose(my grandmother), Alicia Maria & Clara Ada. So yes Rose was sister to another William.
The original Baters all seemed to be born around Chawleigh or Chulmleigh, Devon and were agricultural labourers. The first time I see William in London is 1861 when he & Mary Ann were in a lodging house.I can only assume that they came to London to find work. Our William eventually became an Engine Driver.
It's impossible to follow the line of all the children so let me know what other information you have.We are probably 2nd cousins 3 times removed or something!!!!
This is likely to get very long winded and possibly not of interest to the forum, so if you want to continue this away from the Forum, contact me direct on my email address.
