Hi, thanks for your reply, My John Bateman, was actually a John Henry Bateman, according to the 1901 census he was aged 49 and in the 1881 census aged 29, so he was born in Hadleigh in 1851/2. In 1881 he was married to an Elizabeth aged 26 - born Hadleigh - with a daughter, Kate C Bateman aged 8. So I expect they married in about 1872.
I did have him married to Elizabeth Jane Gants, but that marriage was in 1867, it is stretching the imagination that John Henry was aged 16 at this time, but somehow I cannot believe that Elizabeth would had married at the age of 12.
I need to do some further work. My John Henry - according to my records - was the son of Henry Bateman - born Dec 12 1819, and Mary Ann Stiff - born 1814, Married Nov 19 1846. In all they had 5 children;
Harriet Bap Aug 5 1848
John Henry1851/2
EmmaBap Oct 8 1858
Hattiet Bap Oct 8 1858
Mary Ann born 26 Mar 1855, Bap 26 Mar 1871
Mary Ann Bateman Married a Robert Allen in Hadleigh on 6 Aug 1871, so she got baptised a little late.
What info do you have on the Batemans around this time??
