I purchased the subject undated studio portrait of a young woman taken by Morse, 826 Market St., San Francisco, CA (the photographer was active at this street address 1881-95). The photo is identified on the back of the mount in period handwriting: "Mrs Chas. L. Batcheller" A likely candidate for the subject's husband is the Charles L. Batcheller listed in the 1870 Census data for Vallejo, Solano Co., CA; the 1880 Census data for San Antonio, Vernon & Florence Road Districts, Los Angeles Co., CA; the 1910 Census data for Los Angeles (resided at 1353 Burlington Avenue), Los Angeles Co., CA; and the 1920 Census data for Los Angeles (resided at 1212-1/2 West Ninth Street), Los Angeles Co., CA. I also found him listed in the 1888-90 Los Angeles city directories and the 1899 California State Roster. Charles L. Batcheller, born about 1861 in CA, was the son of a tax collector, John W. Batcheller, born about 1830 in ME; and Jennie F. (or A.) (maiden name unknown), born about 1833 or 1840 in VT. Charles was employed as a farmer, lawyer, and notary public. He had at least two children--Helen, born about 1893 in CA; and Harry C., born about 1894 in CA. According to the 1910 Census data, he was married twice; his second wife, Elizabeth (maiden name unknown), was born about 1848 in OH. The subject photo could be of her or an unidentified first wife.
