BELMONT - Stuart H. Batchelder, 79, of Great Brook Drive, died Saturday, Feb. 4, 2006, at the Lakes Region General Hospital in Laconia.
Mr. Batchelder was born June 30, 1926 in Laconia, the son of Roscoe and Mildred (Hawkins) Batchelder.
Mr. Batchelder was raised in Nashua and attended local schools He graduated from Nashua High School in 1944 and then attended Dartmouth College in Hanover. Mr. Batchelder served in the U. S. Navy during World War II and was a signalman on the USS Tangier. Mr. Batchelder was employed by the New England Telephone Co. for 39 years and worked in various departments. He retired in 1989.
He volunteered with VITA, providing tax assistance to senior citizens and low-income families. Mr. Batchelder was a member of the Telephone Pioneers, the Power Squadron, a lifetime member of the Nashua Lodge of Elks and active with the pulmonary group in Nashua and with the Road Runners in Laconia. He was an avid sailor and enjoyed skiing, golf, genealogy and computers.
His surviving family includes his wife of 57 years, Norma (Worden) Batchelder of Belmont; two daughters, Karen A. Lofstrom of Nashua and Kim A. Batchelder of Portland, Maine; a grandson, Derek D. Lofstrom of Nashua; a sister, Elizabeth Cruckshank, of Chester, Conn.; and several nephews and nieces.
He was predeceased by a brother, Richard Batchelder.
Calling hours will not be held.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday at 11 a.m. in the Carriage House of the Wilkinson-Beane Funeral Home, 164 Pleasant St., Laconia.
A private spring burial will be in the family lot in Union Cemetery, Laconia.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the American Lung Association of N.H., 9 Cedarwood Drive, Unit 12, Bedford 03110 or Community Health & Hospice, Inc, 780 N. Main St., Laconia 03246.
