Charles Roscoe Bassford Became Charles Roscoe Craig

Hello,

My GG grandfather was Charles R. Craig. After several years of fruitless searching for this person prior to 1880, I finally discovered that he was born Charles Roscoe Bassford. I have the name change document and several other lines of proof, but still no reason as to why he changed.

Charles Basford is listed in the 1860 census of Hopkinton, Middlesex, MA, but I can find no trace of either name in 1870. Charles father was William Martin Bassford. Are there any descendants out there of William Martin Bassford, b. c 1815 in Maine?

Please let me know if anyone has any information. I would be glad to share what information I have.

Thanks,

Steve Rocca
