Update! Apologies to Nathaniel's branch. The 900 acres Nathaniel purchased from William Gray was previously owned by brother-in-law Joseph Chatwin. Nathaniel also purchased from William Gray (who removed to Georgia near Augusta) the 6,719 acres sold by his father, Thomas "the Elder" Bassett, III in 1750. One tract, 2,719 acre Plantation situated on Appomattox River and another tract, 4,000 acres situated on Willis River. Nathaniel's nephew, Thomas V, son of his brother Thomas IV, was attending school in Virginia at the time of his father's death in 17811/82. Thomas IV was murdered by Indians on Bassetts Creek just across the River Tombigbee from his St. Stephens Plantation. The Creek, bearing his name, is divided by the River Tombigbee as are Clarke and Washington Counties in Alabama. I wonder if Thomas IV was living with his Uncle Nathaniel while attending school in Virginia? Interested in sharing infor with anyone working this line. Thanks!
