I am trying to locate information on Augusta Caroline Bassett. She was born in New York in January 1827, calculating from her headstone, which indicates she died on 10/11/1875. Her headstone indicates she died at age 48 year, 9 mos., and 28 days. It is quite a headstone, approximately seven feet tall. She married William Sharp in Huron, OH on 08/04/1846. The family moved to CA in the early 1850's and I believe she had sisters and family back East that she wrote to often and she did not like the traveling and was very homesick for the East. She is buried in Fort Jones, CA and I have pictures of her headstone. I also have a couple pictures of her if anyone thinks they may be able to recognize the pictures. I have heard stories that she spoke French, and was well educated. I also believe that she may be from near St. Lawrence Co., NY. A family member has told me that her father was likely a J. V. Bassett who gave them a rifle with the inscription J. V. Bassett, her mother may have been Doris or Dorcas. If any one has any ideas I would be interested.
