Harvey Bassett Dies at Age 98: Was Pioneer Thursday, February 20, marked the passing of one of Tuscola's oldest and highly respected citizens Harvey S. Bassett, son of a pioneer Tuscola family. Mr Bassett died at the age of 98 in the Martin Nursing Home where he had been a patient for the past 18 months. He was born Sept. 25, 1859, the son of Dr. Harve Jonathan and Euretta Flanders Bassett. He was the second child born in Tuscola; his father who came from Vermont, was the first physician to practice in Tuscola. He attended the Tuscola schools and graduated in the class of 1880 from Tuscola High School. On February 27, 1887, Mr. Bassett married Bella Hunt of Prarieton, Ind. They were the parents of two sons; one who died in infancy and the other Frank, died in June 1940. Mr. Bassett was proud of his pioneer family and his many years in Tuscola. He used to say that he and the town grew up together through good times and bad, through five wars, and through the administrations of the presidents from James Buchanan and Abraham Lincoln to Dwight D. Eisenhower. His first vote was for James A. Garfield. Mr. Bassett's long career as a business man included the operation of a shooting gallery, for he was interested in guns, and was an excellent shot. Later he became a dealer in Victrolas, and was the first to sell the Victor talking machine in Illinois in 1893. Funeral services were conducted Saturday morning at the Waddington Funeral Home by the Rev. Gordon Engstrom of the First Baptist Church. Music was by Ted Cox. Pall bearers were W.F. Ellis, Bruce Williams, Wendall Warren, Roy Hopkins, H.B. Bowles, and O.J. Bowles. Survivors are two nephews, Ralph Bassett and Jesse Bassett I welcome any input/queries on this line Nancy Notify Administrator about this message?
