1926 - 2002

HOLYOKE - Merlon Bassett, age 76, of Holyoke, passed away peacefully at home on Thursday, Dec. 27th. Born in Portland, Maine on Aug. 11, 1926, he settled in Holyoke in 1950. He joined the Merchant Marines at the beginning of WWII and then joined the Army where he served bravely in the European Theater and the African Campaign. Merlon then joined the Air Force until 1962 and finally was a member of the Massachusetts Air National Guard, serving with the 104th Tactical Fighter Group, serving in the military for a total of 22 years. Merl worked for the Brown Paper Company for many years and then worked for the Commonwealth of MA as a 3rd Class Engineer, retiring in 1988. After retiring, he looked forward each year to spending the winter in Florida where he enjoyed fishing. His favorite pasttime during retirement was repairing bicycles for his children, his grandchildren, and the children of the neighborhood. Merl is survived by his loving wife of 54 years, Beatrice (Villasis-Teran) Bassett; his six children, Anna Eddy and her husband Roger of Newington, CT, Merlon A. and his wife Mary Ann (Sattler) of West Brookfield, MA, James of Setauket, NY, Gregory and his companion Darlene Sinay of Agawam, David and his wife Gail (Mailloux) of Holyoke, Joanne Horak and her husband David of Palmer; a sister-in-law, Fabiola Vega of Holyoke; 13 grandchildren, Alyssa, Kevin, Christopher, Rachael, Marielle, Michael, Jason, Chad, Ryan, Tyler, Zachary, Luke and Venessa; and several nieces and nephews. Merl was predeceased by his brothers, Millerd, Irving and William Bassett. The funeral will be Saturday morning, Dec. 28th from the Dillon Funeral Home, 124 Chestnut St., Holyoke at 10:30 a.m. with a Mass of Christian Burial at 11:30 a.m. in Immaculate Conception Church, N. Sumner St., Holyoke, with burial in St. Jerome Cemetery.
