I descend from Thomas Bassett III born 10 December 1696, New Kent Co., VA; received land grant August 8, 1735 and another December 1, 1740 in Goochland Co. situated in what later became Cumberland Co., VA.; removed in 1750 to St. Paul's Parish (Augusta), Richmond County, GA. Thomas Bassett III, son of Thomas Bassett II also born New Kent Co. and Elinor, son of William Bassett born 1643 York Co., VA and Anne? (see LWT, and Codicil thereto, of William Felgate York Co., York Co. Court Records dissolution of Guardianship of Capt. John Underhill, and Virginia Land Records), who was son of Thomas Bassett I born 1617 England, emigrated at age 18 from London on the "Truelove" June 10, 1635 (several sources) and married in Virginia ca. 1642 Mary, maiden name unknown. Mary's subsequent three marriages also well documented. Thomas Bassett I is probable son of William Bassett who, according to records of the Virginia Company (WMQ), was "Slaine of the College People" (need to recheck the immigration date of William Bassett with wife Isabella and one servant). Thomas Bassett I and Mary had two children: William and Mary born 1645 who was referred to as "my daughter Bassett" in her mother's will (1682 York Co.). William Bassett and Anne had two sons; Thomas II and John; daughters Ursula, Mary, Elizabeth, Anne and Frances. Thomas II died 20 April 1720. William's will is dated October 15, 1720. Thomas II and Elinor had sons: John born February 5, 1694, Thomas III, Nathaniel born February 18, 1701, William born July 1, 1705. William died March 8, 1716 followed by John on March 17. Nathaniel died in Goochland ca 1732-33 (LWT); brother Thomas named executor and nephew Nathaniel primary heir. Daughters were Anne, Elizabeth, Jane and Ursula. Thomas married secondly Elizabeth, by whom he had Mary born April 4, 1717; Elizabeth died 3 days later. Thomas had son David born 7 November, 1719 by third wife Mary who died 9 days later. Thomas Bassett III married February 25, 1719 in St. Peter's Parish, New Kent Co., VA Lydia (Lidia) Howle (Howl). He sold his property holdings in Cumberland Co. (6,719 acres) to William Gray of the same County. The (Governor's) Council Minutes of Georgia reflect that he had a wife and two sons and was granted lands about 1752. Council Minutes also reflect that sons would receive favorable consideration. Thomas III and Lydia Bassett had the following children: Nathaniel born abt. 1721, Mary born abt. 1727, Frances Bassett born Marach 7, 1728, Elizabeth Bassett born abt. 1733 and Thomas Bassett IV born abt. 1738/39. Thomas III married Elizabeth Mills in Savannah, GA in 1754; one daughter, Louissa was born of this marriage. Just prior to his death in 1758 Thomas "the Elder" conveyed by Deed of Gift, slaves to son Thomas IV and Louissa. Thomas III died intestate; Thomas IV, still a minor in 1758, had three guardians, all appointed at his request, two of which were Edward Bernard and Lachlan MacGillivary. Thomas Bassett IV married Lucy and received two land grants in St. Paul's Parish (Augusta), Georgia; one in 1762 and another in 1768. A staunch Royalist, Thomas IV fled the American Patriots of Georgia to the settlements on the River Tombigbee near St. Stephens in the Mobile District of the British Territory with his wife Lucy and sons Nathaniel and Thomas V. He was granted by King Geoge III in 1776 two grants (present day Washington Co., AL); one consisting of 750 acres at Thomas' Bluff, more commonly known as McIntosh Bluff, and the other consisting of 1,050 acres on Bayou Bassett or Bassetts Creek. Thomas Bassett IV was murdered by Indians in 1781 on Bassetts Creek (so named for him) just across the River from his 1,050 acre plantation which was inherited by Thomas Bassett V; son Nathaniel inherited the lower Plantation at McIntosh Bluff. Nathaniel died n.s.p. sometime after 1801 and before 1804 as Thomas was the Administrator of his estate in March of 1804 at the time of the hearings conducted by the Land Commission to review land grant presences in the Mississippi Territory. Nathaniel Bassett, son of Thomas III, born abt. 1721 - died abt. 1794 in Prince Edward, VA, was also granted land in Georgia. The early grants were granted in Trusteeship and absent a "male" heir, reverted to the Trust; title did not pass to the heirs in "fee simple" as did purchased lands and lands granted under later Acts. Nathaniel returned to Virginia in 1754 where he purchased from William Gray the 6,719 acres of land previously sold by his father. Nathaniel Bassett, son of William and Joanna Burwell Bassett was born in 1719, according to the Family Bible record available at the Library of Virginia. Burwell is a common given name in both the Bolling (Bowing), Brewer and Boykin family lines; all of which are allied with our Bassett line in Washington Co., AL.
