My latest theory is that William is a younger brother to Richard Bassett of Maryland that moved to Georgia at an early date. He is reported to be a son of Nathaniel Bassett, born circa 1719, who was a son and 12th and youngest child of William Bassett. Richard and William both had sons named Ezekiel, the only two Ezekiels that I have seen in the Bassett family so far. Both were also from Georgia. Many of Richard's children moved to Arkansas a little later and where there around 1850 or so. If we can find information about Nathaniel and his son Richard, we may also be able to place William.
