I think that it is highly likely that we are distant relations.
Our family legend, which I have found to be inaccurate, is that the Bassels once had a double "l" at the end so that our name and yours would be spelled alike. I do not think that is the only difference and would appreciate an e-mail from you.
Our earliest known relative was Benjamin Bassel. The "a" is short, and the "e" is pro-nounced "uh". There are a bunch of Bassels around the country, but not many.
If you will check the LDS family history site, you will see how many variations there are in the name.
I think that this family has Jewish roots. The variation that has clung to those roots is Bessel. What I have discovered is that the members of the family that I know about have done very well in America--there are doctors and lawyers and prominent landholders.
I would be most interested in exploring a possible connection. Please drop me a note and lets see what we can figure.
