Since I really don't know the family in question, this is only an educated guess.

The mother was Jeanett Clark. She married a Middleton. The son should have been theirs, but he wasn't because she had an affair with a Basket cousin. Therefore, he could be known as Malcom Middleton alias Malcom Basket.

People were the same then as they are now. I don't understand why people think our morals have changed. We just talk about it out in the open now and they kept quiet back then. That's the only difference.
