I have found an old 1766 Bible, which has little family information in it, although from what it has, I believe it to be a Bible from Culpeper Co VA. It does contain a list of slaves as well as one page with the family of James Coates and Mary Smith. I think the Biblle may have belonged to a James Smith in the late 1700-and the last date in the Bible is 1830. But on one pate, in between the names of some Slaves who were born is James Smith with the names Ann and Nancy Basham and further down the page, again, James along side Mary and Sarah Basham. The other writing on the page all involve the purchase, birth and death of slaves. outside of two other names- those a person purchased slaves from- one was Robert Yancey and the other Augustine Cowne- both of Culpeper Co VA. The question is does anyone have any information on why these four women, Ann, Nancy, Mary and Sarah Basham are listed adjacent to James and James Smith- but do not appear to be slaves. Its as if he had practiced writing his name on this page and then wrote over it. The women are written in between lines of slaves almost in a different hand, as if they were friends or relatives but no explanation, no dates, just the four names and all with their last names.
Its more curiousity than anything. I have no real connection to this family nor to the Bible which is part of a museum display for the underground railroad at the current time. I am sending photographs to a descendant of the family named in the Bible, although I'm not sure how that family is connected to the Bible either, unless it belonged to a maternal ancestor yet to be identified.
Looking for connection between Coates, Smith, Basham, Yancey or Cowne.
