Hi, Basden Family Members. I am an anthropologist, working in southeastern Nigeria, who also does historical work. Over the years, I have done quite a lot of research on the Church Missionary Society's Niger Mission, based in Onitsha, Nigeria. One of the CMS's most active missionaries in the early decades of the 20th Century was Archdeacon George T. Basden--who I expect was a member of the English Basden family, discussed on this forum. I am trying to gain access to the Rev. Basden's papers for several reasons: 1. He was an amateur anthropologist who wrote two books on Igbo-speaking people. 2. He was a gifted photographer (as we can see from his texts), who took a large number of photographs during the several decades he lived in and around Onitsha, Nigeria. 3. Very few papers of Basden's reside in the CMS Archives in Birmingham, UK--and almost nothing in the Public Record Office in Kew. 4. I would very much like to know more about Rev. Basden and his work--and, as a historian-anthropologist, would like to publish information about that work for others to read. His papers, if they still exist, represent a unique archive of material on the early years of European missionization and colonialization in southeastern Nigeria. If you know the whereabouts of G. T. Basden's papers, including any letters, diaries, manuscripts and photographs (glass negatives?), I would very much like to talk with you about these materials. Thanks for reading such a long posting.
