William & Almira Barton, Susquehanna Co., PA 1850
I am seeking to learn what Almira Barton's maiden name was; she was the wife of William Barton, and they lived in Apolacon Township, Susquehanna Co., PA, in the 1850 census, p. 171, 2616/2616.William was aged 65 (born about 1785 in NY), and Almira was aged 62 (born about 1788 in Connecticut).Children with them were Louisa, 30; Elizabeth, 12; Lewis, age 26, all born in Pennsylvania. Also in the household was M. Sherman -- I can't tell if Sherman was his last name or just his middle name, making him a Barton also.He was 11, born in PA.
Almira and William Barton were named as sellers of land in Warren, Litchfield Co., CT, in a deed (Vol. 9, p. 405, 14 March 1839), 23 acres sold to Ebenezer Tanner. This land may have belonged to John Bates, who died in 1818 in Kent, Litchfield Co., CT. Three of John's known daughters were also sellers of this land, listed with their husbands: Joseph and Lucinda (Bates) Prince; Daniel and Betsey (Bates) Fairchild; and Ezra Daniel and Cynthia (Bates) Smith. Others whom I have not yet been able to identify who were sellers also were: Nathaniel and Polly Benedict of Salisbury, Litchfield Co., CT; Parthena Marsh of Susquehanna Co., PA; and Sally Noteware or Notaway or Noteman, who lived in Owego, Tioga Co., PA. Joseph and Lucinda Prince resided in Bradford Co., PA. The Fairchilds were in Owego, Tioga Co., NY; and the Smiths were in Fulton Co., Illinois.Bennet, spelled Bennett also, Bates acted as attorney on behalf of the parties selling the land. He was a son of John Bates and Violet Sackett. Violet was John's first wife, who died in 1807. John's second wife, Margaret (maiden name unknown) survived him.
I would love to be able to identify William and Almira Barton's relationship to John Bates and the other people on the 1839 deed.
