Carl,
I'm sorry it has taken me so long to reply to your message.I'm not sure why I didn't see it earlier.
My "D. E. Bartley," which was probably for "Daniel (or Dannie) Eugene Bartley," died in Hempstead, TX in December 1865.We believe the following were his children, but only one seems to have survived to have children of his own, Eugene Bartley, Sr.:
Eugene Bartley, Sr. was born in Missouri on 13 Sep 1852.We believe this was when his parents were en route to Texas down the Mississippi River via New Orleans and Galveston. He died 20 Jan 1913, Travis Co., TX.All family members I know about today who descend from D. E. Bartley, descend through this person.
Willie Bartley was born ca. 1857 in what was then Austin (now Waller) Co., TX.; he is said to have lost a leg when a train ran over him.
Daniel Bartley was born between 1860 and 1866 in Hempstead in then Austin (now Waller) Co., TX; family tradition says he left home one day to go to Brenham, TX to collect a debt and never came home.
We have recently discovered that there was a fourth son, Bonney Bartley, born between 1850 and 1860.We have a old tintype photo of him, but he probably died of a childhood illness before 1860.
What is so frustrating is that D. E. Bartley was a man of substantial means. He is said to have been a physician, and he owned considerable property in and around Hemptead, TX.His widow, Ada Jordan Bartley was able to live from the proceeds of selling property for many years after his death. And photos of the four sons do not suggest a poor man; they were well-dressed and have the appearance of children of a well-off family. But I have found very little about D. E. Barelty. That's all I can tell you.Good luck.
