Update on Samuel BARTLEY
This is what I have been able to establish so far. NOTE: BARKLEY, BARTLEY and sometimes BARTLETT have been used interchangeably.
1) There are records of several BARKLEY/BARTLEYs in Orange, NC
Tax Rolls for Orange, NC
1755 BARKLEY, Thomas
1772 BARTLEY, John
1779 BARKLEY, Francis
Inventory of goods and chattels of Francis BARTLETT deceased, sold at public auction by Joseph WOODY, Administrator
Orange, NC Book A, pg. 307 dated 5 Jul 1784, recorded Aug 1784
Purchasers were: Joseph WOODY, John THOMPSON, James PARTIN, Henry PARIS, Caleb WILLIAMS, Rachel PHINNEY, Joseph NORMAN, Thomas BRADSHAW, Samuel MCMULLEN, Thomas WHITEHEAD, Henry O'DANIEL, Mary PENNEL, Margaret MCMUULIN, Mary TAYLOR, John WINNERY, Robert WINNERY, Samuel STUART, John MORTON, John STEEL, Moses PAYCE, Catren WHITEHEAD, William PARIS, William BAREKLEY, Elie MCDANIEL, John PAYNE, Molton MUBANKS, James ROACH
The above mentions a Francis BARTLETT and a William BAREKLEY. I think the Francis BARTLETT is the Francis BARKLEY from the above tax list.
2) Also, as far as John BARTLEY is concerned. The Cane Creek Monthly Meeting records (Still haven't figured out what county this is in - see it listed, Chatham, Orange, and Alamance) list the marraige of the Widow Mary WHINERY to the widower Jacob MOON 1812, 10, 15.She was named as the daughter of John and Eleanor Bartley, and widow of John WHINERY.
see http://members.aol.com/janfwatson/page701.htmlhttp://members.aol.com/janfwatson/page701.html under 3. John WHINERY
3) Now, to Samuel. What I have:
Samuel BARTLEY
b. 1780 NC [source: 1850 Hickman, TN census pg. 30, #412]
d. aft 1850, probably Hickman, TN
m. 9 Sep 1809 Orange, NC
Mary WHINNERY
b. 1792 NC [source 1850 Hickman, TN census]
d. aft 1850, probably Hickman, TN
children:
[sources 1820 Orange, NC; 1830 Bedford, TN; 1840 Hickman, TN; 1850 Hickman, TN]
There are several older children that I have not identified:
2 females b. 1810/1820
2 male b. 1815/1820
1 female b. 1820/1825
1 male b. 1820/1825
Then:
* Samuel BARTLEYb. 1824
* Jane BARTLEYb. 1828
* William J. BARTLEY1829
* Elizabeth BARTLEY b. 1831
* Isabella b. 1835
[I believe Isabella is my ancestor Savilla BARTLEY who married Elias G. Clayton]
4) Now - also of interest
Mary WHINNERY is believed to be the daughter of Robert WHINNERY of Chatham, NC. will dated : 21 Feb 1809, proven 7 May 1809 - Book A, pg. 164
One of Robert WHINNERY's other daughters Sarah is thought to have married a Jesse DOANE 19 Sep 1806 Orange, NC.
This is where it gets interesting:
Jesse DOANE's sister Elizabeth DOANE married a Robert BARTLEY 3 Apr 1800 NC (I have seen the county listed as Chatham or as Surry)
Robert BARTLEY b. 1776 NC, died 14 Dec 1864 Greene, TN
Elizabeth DOANE b 15 Oct 1777 NC, died 10 Feb 1871 Greene, TN
children:
Rachel b. 1801
Martha b. 1802
John b. 1804
Elizabeth b. 1806
Samuel b. 1810
Mary b. 1810
Mahala b. 1811
Lorenso b. 1814
Robert b. 1818
Thomas b. 1821
Ruth b. 1826
Francis (some researchers list him, others do not)
I have not completely verefied this family listing yet, but I found it interesting to look at how the male name pattern in Robert BARTLEY's family fits the names of the above known males in Orange, NC. - John, Samuel, Robert, Thomas, Francis, Lorenso.
I really think, that Robert BARTLEY is a good candidate for an older brother for Samuel BARTLEY.
Of course, that raises a lot of questions, like why Samuel would be in the Thompson will, and not Robert.
5) I do not know whether or not Ann Bartley ROACH is Samuel's mother. Without a way to verify whether there were older children in his family it is difficult. I have not been able to find Lewis ROACH's family after the 1800 Greenville, SC census.
