I encourage you to look at the SSDI (Google it - Social Security Death Index)... I found:
James R Bartlett b 16 Dec 1926; d 21 May 1995; SS Card issued in SC - could this have been your father?
From there you can check the 1930 census to see if you can find him there. Do you have, or can you find, a death certificate?
If you want to try to determine what BARTLETT line he was from, you need to find a living male BARTLETT descendant and have him participate in the BARTLETT-DNA Project. Search this forum for DNA to find out more about our project - over 120 participants so far, and 13 different lines determined by matching DNA.
