I am researching MARY E. NEWLAND,1852-1903, daughter of J. A. Bartlett (per tombstone)
1860 Census - Jackson Co. Wisconsin, US.post office: Melrose
lists:D# 515F # 464
Asa (*Jas.A.)Bartlett, age 30, sex M, occ. Blacksmith, birthplace Maine(*so d.o.b. abt. 1830)(*The records were written over so may be error in name.)
Caroline Bartlett, age 29, sex F, birthplace Canada (*1831)
Mary Bartlett, age 8, sex F, birthplace Canada(*1852)
Thomas Bartlett, age 7, sex M, birthplace Canada(*1853)
Loran Bartlett, age 5, sex M, birthplace Canada(*1855)
Josephine Bartlett, age 1,sex F birthplace Wisconsin (*1859)
(The family must have come to Wisconsin from Canada sometime between 1855 and 1859)
Additional information regarding the Bartlett family:The following newspaper article was found in the Badger State Banner May/15/1909.
J. W. Bartlett, a cousin of Dr. J. A. Bartlett of Melrose died (*c. May, 1909) age 83, at Melbourne, Canada
(*born abt. 1826)
He was a grandson of Captain Jos. Bartlett who held a commision in the Continental Army and fought at Bunker Hill.He also fought in other historic battles of the Revolutionary War for U.S. independence. After the War he emigrated north and settled in Melbourne, Canada. The Bartlett family were one of the first to settle on the American continent, coming over to Plymouth in the first immegrant ship, the Mayflower.
I have also found some obituaries on some of the Bartlett children listed on the census. They are children of Dr. J.A. Bartlett.
Does this Bartlett family connect to yours?
Audrey
