From "The Jerrard Family and its Chideock Branch", 1910 by Frederick Jerrard:
This branch of the Bartlett family came originally from Wiltshire, there were two brothers, one settled in Chideock and the other went towards Beaminster.
1 Benjamin, bap. 1715, d. 1791 m. Hannah
Bayley
2 Samuel m. Joan Rinhards
3 Betty, bap. 1738 m. Joseph Jerrard
Chideock, Dorset records show that Samuel was Churchwarden at St. Giles and also one of the leading smugglers of Chideock. Though fishing was one of the occupations of Chideock residents it took second place to smuggling. The Bartlett family carried on that tradition in the 1800's, though several were caught, fined, and/or imprisoned.
Among the descendants of Samuel Bartlett, the smuggler, are a Major General (a grandson) his son a famed mathematician George Birch Jerrard and a World War I Sopwith Camel pilot Allan Jerrard who was awarded the Victoria Cross.
