The John W. Bartleson who's memoirs you are reading is my great-great grandfather. Of course, his father John is the one whose parents we are chasing.
You were right about his impetousness - he left Grand Chain with his two eldest son's to help "tailer" their uniforms to enlist in the Mexican American War. He got caught up in the jingoism and enlisted himself, only to die at the battle of Beuna Vista in 1848. My great-great grandfather was born postumously.

I am courious about your interest in the Bartleson family. There are few copies of John Wool's memoirs around. I have an original and I know a copy is in the Wayne Co. KY archives. I saw it there, but no one knew where it came from.

The family historian has written one history of the Bartleson's of Grand Chain. He has placed John Bartleson or "Pap" as he was called,in Massilon, Ohio and along the Ohio river to Bethel Place in Morgan Co. OH from 1825 to 1842. 1825 was one year after his marriage to "Polly" Long???? Could be.
In 1842 John sold the farm and told the family they were going to iowa were his uncle Bartle lived. They rafted down the Ohio river and ended up in Grand Chain - somewhat short of Iowa.
Our historian is Marvin V. Layman, Ph.D. in Sociology. He is 75 years old and my 3rd cousin. he has been working over 15 years on this and i have to trust his view unless i have very convincing proof otherwisw.
He admits the line up from John and Mary Chapman is not strong, but gives less creadence to the KY Bartleson's theory.
The only thing I know, and I have viewed the microfilmed census records involved, is that there was a John Bartleson living in Wayne Co. KY in the 1820 Census and then he is gone in 1830.
