Just to add some insight to this. I went to our Historical Society in Maryland and looked at the city directory listing for every year from 1870-1910 trying to figure out how my family name,Bartholomey, came about. I found that it was originally Bartholomew and my family changed it about 4 times before it eventually got to Bartholomey. They used Bartholomaei, Bartholomay, Bartholomeir, Bartholoman. So you might need to trace the evolution of the name by following it year by year in a city directory, if possible.
