The Chariton Democrat Leader, Chariton, Iowa
Saturday, December 7, 1822

A terrible affliction has fallen upon the family of REV. W.F. BARTHOLOMEW, of Afton. On Sunday, Nov. 19th, their little boy, LEE, aged five years, died from membranous croup, and on Tuesday morning, Nov. 20th, EDNA, their eight year old daughter, was taken away by diphtheria. The following is from the Afton Tribune News:

The family of REV. W.F. BARTHOLOMEW is again severed by death. Little EDNA, the eldest, departed this life Monday evening. In the dispensations of Divine Providence the adage often holds good, "Misfortune comes not singly." It was so in the case of worthy and patient Job -- worthy because of his patient reliance when one after another, the blessings of his life took flight -- and he was enabled to exclaim "The Lord gave and the Lord hath taken away and blessed be the name of the Lord." The weeping parents depart today at 2:40 p.m. taking with them their only living child and the bodies of the two dead. These little caskets they will inter at Chariton where they will spend a few days and then seek rest and relief at the paternal home of MR. B. in Indiana.

The sympathies of this entire community go with these bereaved ones and the prayers of Christ's people ascend to the only source of consolation in their behalf.
