The St Bartholomew Massacre was in 1572. Huguenots (apparently a german/dutch word) were initially followers of John Calvin out of Geneva, Switzerland. There are many Barts in Bern, Switz back to at least 1554, predating the massacre. Bern is at the head of the Rhine, which runs along Alsace and Baden/Wurt. The exodus from France was after 1572, and after 1685, when the Edict of Nantes was abolished. Barts are spread all over Germany, 1606 was the earliest I found. Barts are in England in the mid-1400s before Columbus. Barthelemys are spread in France back to late 1500s. Holland - mid-1500s. The Bart Book discusses old stories that the 5 brothers that came into the Philadelphia area circa 1700 might have been Huguenots fleeing from near Switzerland. The 2 English Barts came into Boston around 1630. One of the Penn Barts was married in Branford CT - the English Bart stronghold. Somehow this all may patch together - Alsace/Baden/Swit - the Rhine - Rotterdam - London - the flights from France.
