Robert,
If you dig back thru this site you will find several discussions on name origins. To begin with, McFarlane is an Anglicized version of Bartholomew. Two, Bartholomew Leslie was a Hungarian nobleman who saved the Queen of Scotland and founded Clan Leslie. He was descended from Attila the Hun. Three, Bartholomew was an old Celt/Pict name that was spread to German and Dutch Europe when Scots fled from the Normans. Many sources support these explanations. Also, the Zweibruckens were probably Huguenots fleeing the aftermath of the St. Bartholomew Massacre. And, beside the St. Bartholomews, Bartholomew was one of Jesus' disciples. I suspect that that is the real foundation of the name.
