A family search has discovered the Philippus Hermes-Catharina Barthel connection. What we can't find is the origin of Servatius Hermes, born 1816. married Barbara Brugner somewhere in Germany. His son, Nicholas Hermes, was born 1845 and brought to the US in 1947. They settled finally in St. Paul, MN, but were thought to be in the St. Michael area as well. Nicholas married Elisabeth Tempel born in Jasper, IN area. (The Hermes' were said to be friends of the Tempel's.) Hermes' were thought to have a grocery store in Illinois. They moved to St. Paul area via steamboat from Galena, IL. There is also a close connection to St. Michael, MN where the John Tempel family settled (parents of Elisabeth). My aunt, Walburga Hermes Barthel's husband was Joseph J. Barthel, born l-20-1876. They lived in Fairfax, MN. Their son, William, born 7-5-1906 had a son Joseph W. Barthel, born 8-2-1929. Any relation to you? You?
