Just a point of information. My Bartells are from Bremen, Germany which is in the Alsace-Lorraine region. This region has at various times been part of France and then part of Germany according to the results of the most recent border disputes.Bremen is now in germany, but it has been in France at cetain points.Alsace is heavily influenced by German culture (even the part that is now in France) and the people who left there in the 1830's when my relative did were most likely ethnic Germans whose mother tongue was German, but their citizenship might have been a bit trickier to figure out depending on when and where they were born and who was in charge of the area at the time.If you are looking for immigration records for germans from this region, don't forget to check on whether you need to look at records for French Alsace as well.Vice versa, if you are looking for French from Alsace, don't forget to check if you you need to look at German records too.
