I assume you are familiar with the book of Henry Z. Jones, Jr giving info about the family of Henrich Barthel, who was one of the "Palatines" coming in 1710. He had a son Philip Balthasar Barthel (b. Germany, took communion 1712, West Camp Luth Ch), who was prob dead by 1790. Both he and his brother had sons Johann Philip B. (b 1738 and 1733).
On p 19, Jones refers to a Capt. Philip Bartle d. 25 Mar 1804, age 73, Hillsdale, and papers being issued to Philip Bartle, Jr, of Claverack 23 Apr 1804.
I think I am desc. from Johannes (s/o Philip Balthasar B), and he had a son Philip (b. 18 Apr 1772, Gallatin Ref. Ch, Columbia Co), but he d. without issue. However, I'd bet that every other desc. had a son named Philip.
The name was rendered Barthel, Bartel, Bartle, etc.
