Here are some notes on Sara Harkleroad Bartee:

The Louisville Christian Advocate and the Nashville Christian Advocate 1852-1856 reported her birth as November 25, 1784 in Sullivan Co., TN.

From The Bartee News, April 1995, Volume 6, Number 2:

Extract from the Files of Maribel Bartee Adams:

"This appears to have been originally written in 1949 with added notes (at least some from 1965) which can be found in parenthesis (sic) to clarify the text. Dashes (---) were used quite frequently, as well as incomplete quotation marks. These were not edited (which would have made for easier reading) to allow you to interpret the writer's intention. One point of confusion occurs in that while this begins as recollections of Mary Elizabeth BRYAN, it ends with 'quote(s) of Sallie COLLETT.' It is difficult to tell exactly where this change occured (sic).

"Copied---from longhand recollections of Mary Elizabeth (PHILLIPS) BRYAN---daughter of Susan Amanda BARTEE born 1813---married Wm. PHILLIPS (b. 1809).

"My maternal grandmother's name was Sara HARKLEROAD. She was born in Va (1850 census of Dickson Co. Tenn. says Tenn.)---when her parents died, the estate which was a large one at that time, was left in the hands of her bro---Henry HARKLEROAD. This estate was not divided equally. When my grandmother left Va (Sara HARKLEROAD) she rode horseback to Tenn. All that I know of what she received of this vast estate---was a portion of the family silver which she carried with her in a carpet bag---hung on the horn of her side saddle.

"In Montgomery Co. Tenn, she met my grandfather Jesse BARTEE (father of James Thomas BARTEE) and they married. To them a large family was born---13 (9) children. 5 girls and 4 boys lived to be grown. Among these were my mother (Susan Amanda) and her twin sister Sara. My mother was Susan Amanda BARTEE. Later there were James Thomas BARTEE, Betsy BARTEE, Polly BARTEE, Geo Washington BARTEE and the youngest Jesse BARTEE. [ed.----a note was placed above the word youngest which I was unable to fully read---'1967 No youn___']

All of children of Sara and Jesse BARTEE

William Ballard BARTEE
Susan Amanda BARTEE 1813; mar. Wm. PHILLIPS
Sarah BARTEE 1813
Betsy BARTEE (Elizabeth)
Polly BARTEE (Mary); mar. a HAYS
Geo Washington BARTEE (mar. Susan A. MOORE)
Jesse BARTEE May 2, 1819
Lucy BARTEE
James Thomas BARTEE (Maribel's & Willie's, etc. grandfather); b. July 11, 1817; d. 4-23-1895

(She doesn't mention William, Lucy and one other died early.)

"My mother Susan Amanda BARTEE married Wm. PHILLIPS from New Jersey (Trenton). Aunt Mary married Mr. HAYES. Uncle Jesse married Lucy BULLWELL(??) (this last name was considerably blurred---but Sallie BARTEE says its "BULLOCK") I do not remember Uncle James Thomas' wife's name (Maria SULLIVAN)

"Before the marriages of her children---my grandmother (Sara HARKLEROAD) wife of Jesse BARTEE was left a widow 40 years---dying in ther 90th year. (Jesse BARTEE died 1826)

"A farm in Montgomery Co. was their home. After Uncle Jesse (her son) married Miss Lucy A. BULLWELL(??) (BULLOCK) my grandmother made her home with him---but divided her time with each of her children as she could.

"---Grandmother (Sara HARKLEROAD) was a remarkable woman, and was well cared for by her children. She was an excellent horseback rider and rode the hills of Montgomery Co. the last years of her life. She was most intelligent---every one who knew her went to her for advice. She was a true christian---as I remember---was a member of the Methodist Church. Her son James Thomas BARTEE was a Methodist preacher. Uncle 'Wash' as we always called him--- married a smart, refined young woman---Susan A. MOORE of Mtgy. Co., Tenn.--- we called her Aunt 'Sookey.'

"The first entertainments I remember _ was an 'infair' as it was called. (an 'infair' those days was a big feast given by the groom's people---after a wedding.) This 'infair' was given at my grandmothers home in New York, Tenn. where my mother was called to assist as hostess. I was five years old. (Mary Phillips BRYAN writing this) There was a big crowd of dancers---and such a supper! in plentitude, daintiness and richness of all homes---made goodness with taste from recipes procured from Miss Leslie's cook book. 'I remember that well.'

"My father was Wm. PHILLIP. My mother Susan Amanda BARTEE---my father was born in Trenton N.J. 1809.

"My mother's father Jesse BARTEE was born 1783. My mother Susan Amanda BARTEE was born 1813 and her twin sister Sara.

"William PHILLIP (b. 1809), husband of Susan Amanda BARTEE was quite a wealthy gentleman---A member of firm---'Phillip-Kenedy-Cobb' operating 3 iron furnances in Montgomery and Stewart Co. Tenn. Names of these 3 furnances were 'Logrange---'Eclipse' and 'Clark.' The Yankies burned these furnances---freed their slaves, etc. Wm PHILLIP was imprisoned by the Yankies---for refusing (as they thought) to reveal whereabouts of burried (sic) money. He died in May, 1864 as the result of mistreatment.

"We had 3 homes in Co. burned and so we have so few records is one reason I'm determined to gather up a few records." _ quote Sallie COLLETT

"At these furnances or foundries is where James Thomas BARTEE a son of Jesse & Sara H. BARTEE served an apprenticeship---learning to make articles of iron. Some of these small articles remains in the BARTEE family now (1949)---Burton BARTEE has a shaving bowl with 3 legs---to set in fireplace to heat shaving water. (1965 His wife has it in Decatur, Ala.)

"James Thomas BARTEE was an old bachelor in the 30's when he came to Ala to preach. He was 38 (37, b. 1818) years old when he married Maria SULLIVAN (Jan. 23 1855) near Berkley, Ala. at grandfather SULLIVANs place. James Thomas BARTEE was 8 years old when his father Jesse BARTEE died (1826). James Thomas BARTEE was a Methodist preacher. He was a charter member of North Ala Conference _ left Clarksville, Tenn to come to Ala." _ quote Sallie BARTEE (his daughter of Gurley Ala.)

"James Thomas BARTEE went to visit his uncle Isaac HARKLEROAD in Cairo, Ill. after the Civil War. Uncle Isaac was a 'well to do' gentleman at this time. He sent a car load of corn, etc. to the people in Alabama (near James Thomas BARTEE's home---where destruction was done by Yankies.

"James Thomas BARTEE visiting in Cairo, Ill. his uncle Isaac HARKLEROAD---from two distinct points this Isaac HARKLEROAD is a brother to Sara HARKLEROAD (the mother of James Thomas BARTEE)---in another place his father as---Henry HARKLEROAD of Washington Co. Tenn---who fought at battle of 'Kings Mt.' Its proof - positive that Sara HARKLEROAD is the daughter of Henry HARKLEROAD Sr.

"We have not found any record of Jesse BARTEE---the husband of Sara HARKELROAD. ---by Sara & Jesse BARTEE naming their first child 'William' leads me to believe Jesse BARTEE's father could have been William BARTEE.----quote Sallie (Mrs. J. R.) COLLETT, 3424 Haynie Ave., Dallas, Texas."

Death Notice in "Clarksville Weekly Chronicle," 20 Sept. 1873, pg. 3:

"On Monday, the 15th inst, at the residence of her son, J. W. Bartee,of this county, Mrs. Sarah Bartee, in the 89th year of her age."
