Judith I have also heard that is of French origin, but don't have any proof. My Bartee line as far back as I have traced was South Carolina, then they moved to Greene county Alabama. My line, David Hopkins Bartee moved on to Walker county Texas and died in Madison county about 1880. Various spellings I have encountered are Barth, Bartie, Bart, etc. I don't know of any in New Orleans. Sorry I can't be more help.
